Growing up in a small town during a time of no cable, computers or internet, you learn to get savvy when you’re eager to discover the world. The library was always my friend and with this resource and a little grit, I decided that if you want something bad enough, you can achieve it. My parents have always been a great example. Both sent themselves to college understanding the importance of a good education. My mom (before online education) worked full-time and went to grad school two days a week, 2 hours away, just to advance her knowledge. She was a teacher and counselor in the community college system until she retired. There, she helped others find their path. My dad was the first in his family to attend college and knows a little bit about everything. He’s an avid reader and has probably read a library of books (or more) in his lifetime. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. I worked in a medical university and teaching hospital for years and found that educating others was rewarding. I became a health educator and believe that everyone should take their health into their own hands. From prevention to management, learning never stops. My personal library is full of non-fiction health and wellness books because it’s part of who I am, not just a job. Learning should be interesting, exciting and inclusive. After more than two decades of working with a variety of clients one-on-one and in groups, I am reminded that we all come from different backgrounds. What may be passionate and interesting to me, may not be to others. Recognizing this, I understand the importance of being able to communicate effectively with individuals so they can learn in a way that's ideal on an individual level. This will help them achieve their goals and assist them in continuing to practice behaviors that are healthy and vital to their longevity and quality of life. By taking this mindset, I also recognize the importance of working with health and wellness professionals so they learn information to advance their education as well as be able to share this knowledge with their clients. Mind Body YOUniversity was created for both everyday individuals and wellness professionals. Education is a vital part of life but too often the information gets complicated, confusing, boring or short-term. For years, I’ve taken health educator continuing education that didn't provide new knowledge and was left wanting more. Anyone who knows me can attest that I love to learn. I'm always looking for new material that can be applied to working with clients in an integrative, naturopathic manner. After thinking a great deal about the education I was taking, I was curious of how I might provide continuing education differently. On the other end of the spectrum is the frustration of receiving limited education at medical appointments. Family members and friends have commented often about this and found themselves seeking information on websites that weren't accurate, leading to misinformation and stress. I understand the lack of time that providers have with patients. I've gone, myself, to medical practitioners and/or specialists who found difficulty with me wanting more information and simply told me what to do instead of talking with me in an integrative manner. When questioned why I should take the approach they recommended, no explanation was provided and my appointment ended. Later, the concern that I questioned was found to be justified which made me glad I trusted my own research and instinct. Through my own life experiences and education, I have created opportunities of learning that help individuals and professionals take both their health and education into their own hands. Through this multi-level educational approach, a holistic style of discovering information and retaining new knowledge and skills is embraced. I believe learning should be interesting, fun and provide guidance that you utilize and want to share with others. #mindbodyyou #mindbodyyouniversity #celestecooperpeel |
